ULI Austin Updates

ULI Hines Competition Mentors Needed

Hello Austin ULI members

Good evening.  We hope that you had a nice holiday.

It is that time of year again for the Gerald Hines ULI Student Design Competition. For the last seven years, ULI-Austin has been proudly supporting this two week long competition by mentoring the teams from UT made up of landscape architecture, planning, architecture and real estate students.  This year, there will be nine student teams.  We are aiming to provide a minimum of three professional mentors per team.  Please email Steven Spears (sspears@designworkshop.com) or call (512.499.0222) if you are interested in participating as a mentor to the students, by December 16th.  Please include in the email to Steven your name, contact information, profession and company name.  Mentoring typically consumes between 4-8 hours over a two week time period.  Specific times to meet with the student teams are dependent on the agreement between you and the team that you are assigned to mentor.

Important dates for the competition include:

• Application due date: December 09, 2013
• Applicants notified of eligibility: December 16, 2013
• Competition dates: January 13, 2014 – January 27, 2014 (this is the two week time period that ULI-Austin provides mentors to the UT student teams)
• Finalist teams announced: February 2014
• Site visit by finalist team representative: March 2014
• Finalist teams presentation: April 2-3, 2014

The Hines competition, now in its twelfth year, is an ideas contest that challenges interdisciplinary graduate student teams to solve a real land use issue. It is open to graduate students who are pursuing real estate-related studies at universities in the United States and Canada, including programs in real estate development, urban planning, urban design, architecture and landscape architecture. Based on a hypothetical proposal, the student teams must act as a master developer by proposing a master land use plan for the development site as well as supplying financial projections needed to support the master development plan.

Thank you again for your participation and giving back to the future generation of ULI members.
