UrbanPlan is an interactive program that provides an engaging opportunity for industry professionals, community stakeholders and policymakers to learn about the fundamental forces that shape and affect the built environment. The team-based exercise simulates the planning process using LEGOs, a 3D site plan and a spreadsheet to respond to a hypothetical RFP for a fictional urban neighborhood.
Teams must decide how dense to build out a 5½ block area, whether to keep or move a homeless shelter, what type of retail is appropriate, and which neighborhood groups to keep happy – all while meeting the financial projections of the City and the Developer. The exercise concludes with teams presenting to a mock City Council that awards the project to the Development Team with the best proposal.
Industry professionals, business development professionals, allied professionals, policymakers, and community stakeholders who are interested in gaining a deeper and more holistic understanding of the forces that affect growth and development should take advantage of this amazing opportunity to connect and learn. The course is also ideal for staff development to educate early career professionals or any staff transitioning from another industry as well.
