Preserving Austin’s Live Music Venues: What’s in it for us?

Live music venues are a vital part of Austin’s identity, raking in millions of tourism dollars annually and increasingly attracting businesses and residents to locate here. Some believe the music and arts scene is the “golden goose” responsible for much of Austin’s phenomenal growth. An unintended side effect of Austin’s boom, however, has been the departure of many musicians and other members of the creative class due to increased rents and other cost-of-living factors. Skyrocketing property valuations and taxes have forced many music venues to close their doors or placed them in constant peril of financial ruin. Due to such development pressures, safety concerns and thin profit margins facing club owners, Austin’s live music scene is at a crisis point and at risk of disappearing in coming years if dramatic action isn’t taken soon.

The June breakfast will explore why it’s critical for the local real estate industry to support the preservation of live music venues in Austin. Panelists who participated on a recent ULI Technical Assistance Panel (TAP), commissioned by the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department to analyze the Red River Cultural District, will share their recommendations for public officials and the business community to undertake to preserve the culture that makes Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

Panelists:

  • John McKinnerney, Castle Hill Partners and Chair of the TAP;
  • Cody Cowan, General Manager of the Mohawk;
  • Christine Maguire, Redevelopment Division Manager , City of Austin; and
  • Dan Wheelus, Attorney
